The Flow of a Hand

How a Hand of Texas Hold’em Plays Out

Every hand follows a clear sequence. Once you understand these four stages, you’ll feel comfortable joining a live table at Lucky Pavilion.

  1. The Blinds and the Deal

Each hand begins with two players posting forced bets called blinds. Every player then receives two private cards, known as hole cards. The small blind and big blind rotate clockwise around the table, and hole cards are dealt face down.

  2. The Flop

Three community cards are dealt face up in the centre of the table. Players combine these with their hole cards to form a hand. This is the first of three community card rounds, and betting occurs after the flop.

  3. The Turn and River

A fourth community card, the turn, and a fifth, the river, are dealt, each followed by a round of betting. By the river, five community cards are available to every remaining player.

  4. The Showdown

Remaining players reveal their hole cards, and the best five-card hand using any combination of hole and community cards wins the pot. Hand rankings determine the winner, and players may fold at any point.

New Player Guide

Key Concepts for New Players

These four ideas will help you feel more confident before your first Texas Hold’em game at Lucky Pavilion.

Hand Rankings

Understanding hand rankings is the first step. From high card to royal flush, knowing what beats what is essential. Royal flush is the highest hand, while high card is the lowest.

Position Matters

Your seat relative to the dealer button affects your strategy. Acting later gives you more information. Late position is advantageous, while early position requires stronger hands.

Reading the Table

Offline poker is about observing opponents. Facial expressions, betting patterns, and timing all provide clues. Face-to-face interaction is key—no digital tells, only real ones.

Bankroll Management

While we don’t discuss money, managing your chips wisely is part of the game. Play within your comfort zone. Chips are neutral, without denominations, and the focus is on enjoyment, not financial gain.
